Role of the Mast cell in wound healing and Skin rejuvenation elucidated 11th Feb 2009

Extract from Calderhead et al. One Mechanism Behind Led Phototherapy For Wound Healing And Skin Rejuvenation: Key Role Of The Mast Cell. Laser Therapy 17.3: 141-148. 2008

Near Infrared light at 830nm, delivered in continuous wave has previously been identified as an effective wavelength in the stimulation of inflammatory stage cells in the wound healing cycle, namely macrophages1 and leukocytes.

A recent study involving 8 healthy male subjects and 830 nm LED therapy  has shown conclusive evidence of the role of LED therapy in skin rejuvenation. The volar aspect of the left forearm was irradiated once for 20 min (60 J/cm2) with a continuous wave 830 nm LED system (Omnilux® plus™, Photo Therapeutics Ltd, Fazeley, UK), the contralateral right forearm serving as an unirradiated control. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of specimens from the left arm at baseline and 48 hr post irradiation from both the left and right arms showed no difference in morphology. However, in the left post irradiation specimens, a mild inflammatory response was noted with highly statistically significant numbers of macrophages, leukocytes and mast cells compared with controls. The mast cells were all in the degranulation stage, having shed at least 50% of their granules into the surrounding normal tissue, 48 hr after the single irradiation with 830 nm. No such degranulation was noted in the contralateral control specimens.

OmniluxTM  system honoured 11th November 2007

Photo Therapeutics Inc. are happy to announce  that it has been honoured with the “2006 Laser & Light Technology Choice Award” in the Best Non Laser Device for Acne Category for its Omnilux™ system.

The award, which is presented by Aesthetic Trends & Technologies magazine, recognizes notable technological innovations in cosmetic laser and light technology.

“We are honoured by this recognition and proud to represent the aesthetics industry as an innovator in non-laser procedures for acne,” said Sue D’Arcy,  of PhotoTherapeutics, Inc. “The award further validates our position as the first choice LED system.  The ideal of using the correct wavelength, intensity and dose of light has always been paramount, resulting in maximized patient outcome. The large number of clinical papers featuring our products should prove to those in the market for an LED device that there is no effective alternative, and that one should not consider unproven, low-powered devices, or those that claim mixed wavelengths as the way forward when the clinical evidence shows, quite clearly, that this is not the case.”

The awards are created to both recognize excellence in the industry, as well as to educate the industry on what aesthetic devices are available and recommended by peers in each category. Recipients were chosen based on product efficacy, cost, reliability, ease-of-use, patient comfort and product training.

Non-invasive methods of treating acne are fast becoming a preferred route for patients seeking optimal results with fewer side effects. Current treatment regimens are not without complications and the long-term effects of antibiotics are still being researched. Omnilux™ offers a highly effective, pain free, light-only treatment without the need to apply topical photosensitizers and the inherent problems associated with these.  Independent clinical studies show an average clearance of between 78-81% of acne lesions following a 4 week course of alternate Omnilux blue and Omnilux revive light therapy. The therapy is well tolerated and patient satisfaction and compliance are significantly high.

Clinical Study adds weight to LED Therapy 3rd August 2007

There has been a great deal of scepticism regarding the efficacy of Light emitting diode (LED) phototherapy in the rejuvenation of photo- and chronologically-aged skin, however recent work, by Drs Park & Lee, Department of Dermatology, National Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, using the Omnilux system (PhotoTherapeutics INC, Carlsbad, CA, USA) looks likely to have quashed much of this cynicism and help establish the mechanism of LED therapy in skin rejuvenation.

The study, involving 76 subjects, was a randomised, controlled, double-blinded clinical study to determine the clinical efficacy, and investigate histologic and ultrastructural changes, enzymatic alterations and changes in key cytokines after Omnilux therapy using two wavelengths, 830nm(Omnilux plus) and 633nm(Omnilux revive).

Subjects were split into 4 study groups, each receiving designated wavelength(s), delivered under a precise time regime in order to stimulate the cell lines involved in all phases of the wound healing process.
